Mr Cardmaker Keeps His Christmas (card) Promises

Well, I promised some Christmas cards.  Now, I promise not to show you all sixty of them.  That would be ridiculous, you know. 
However, I will show you a good handful. 

The majority of these are made with papers from My Mind's Eye, and with PTI dies.  There's also some Stampendous stamps, Stampin' Up stamps, papers, and inks, as well as my Martha Stewart branch punch and sizzix embossing folders. 

Let's start the show!

 

The glitter paper used on these cards is from Michael's.  This is super sturdy card stock (which is actually more like card BOARD) and actually, when I tried to use my dies on it, it really didn't work at first.  I solved the issue by peeling away half of the backing on the paper.  Once I got rid of some of the bulk, it worked just fine.

 These snowflake punches are from Stampin' Up and Martha Stewart.  The background paper is from Basic Gray.

Shimmer paper used in the die cut is by DCWV, the Shimmer Stack.

The silver swirly paper is from AC Papers.  The swirly stamp (in red) is from PTI.

The globe stamp is from Jillibean Soup.

This is the first batch.  I have more.  I STILL promise not to show you all sixty.  On account of that would be ridiculous.  And, on account of I still have to make about 8 more to reach sixty.

Mr Cardmaker is Feeling His Moxie Fab-ishness

Well, ain't I something?!  I am the Moxie Fabber of the Week over at Moxie Fab World!  I am very honored to be chosen.  Cath is the BEST!  Lots of fun happening at Moxie Fab World every week!
What a great thing to take me into the holiday season! 

I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving.  Mine was SO great, but I have to say it was everything BUT relaxing.  We had from 2-4 house guests all week, and THIRTEEN for dinner on Thursday, as well as more dinners tucked in here and there.  Wow, it was fun and really delicious, but I sure needed a NAP by Sunday afternoon!

This week, I wanted to share this card set that I made for my sister, Lisa.  This will probably be the last of the leaves that you'll get from me this season, unless they're Holly or something....

I made this--

Oh, did I mention there was a box?  There's a box.  To hold the cards.

Anyway, a while back I won ('cause my mom says I'm a winner!) a card class from My Little Craft Blog where I learned how do do these leaves with sponge daubers and clear embossing powder, as well as the gold and folder embossed pieces that you see on the bottoms of the cards.  My design is different overall, but I REALLY like this leaf technique, and will use it a lot!

I particularly like the box.  I will make many of those, I'm sure.  It is roomy and sturdy.  Because I won the class, I can't give you too much info on how to create all of these things, but I believe the class is still available for purchase, and it is really fun and informative.  I don't be stealin' from nobody's stuff, so don' ask!

Speaking of leaves, you may remember my rant about having to deal with my forest full of leaves in THIS post.  Well, the other day, Charlie and I returned home from a day out to find that our yard had been mowed and EVERY LEAF WAS GONE!  GONE, I tell you, GONE! 

Turns out, my neighbors Chris (across the street) and Eric (behind us) had been out with their tractors, and after they did their own leaves, got to chatting and decided to make a contest of "who-could-get-up-our-leaves-fastest."  Are these guys the best, or what???  Well, I baked them cookies, and, of course, made them cards.

The sentiment is from 7Gypsies, and the leaf stamps are from Studio112.  I used the same leaf technique for the card stock leaves, as I'm sure you can tell.

Anyway--Chris has been back 4 times(!) to get more leaves, and I could not be more grateful.  He has gotten a thank you care package to supplement his cookies, btw...

Some Call Me Mr. Mojo

No, not really.  I was able to get myself a bit of mojo though, in time to put together a card for Mojo Monday 261.    That sketch looks like this--

I made a card for my SIL Andrea, who is having a birthday with a ZERO in it!  Maybe it'l be lucky for me over at Mojo Monday.

I made this--

I went out on a limb and substituted my circle of leaves for the large circle in the sketch.  Gotta take some chances, sometimes!

This is on GinaK Designs Pure Luxury Kraft card stock. with random bits of very old card stock used in the other elements.  The leaves are Punched with an EK Tools punch from  scraps (mostly from Me & My Big Ideas), that I inked up using a "direct to paper" method.  I also curled up some of the edges of the leaves.
This picture doesn't show it, but they're all coated with some Brilliant gold Delicata ink, so they're really sort of glitzy.  I wish the picture was better at showing that, because it's sort of the best part.  *sigh*....

The gold flag started as textured white card stock, that I ran through my Cuttlebug with an embossing folder, then inked with both sponge daubers and "direct to paper" on the raised surfaces.

I stamped the sentiment in Memento Espresso Truffle ink with a stamp from GKD Enjoy the Sunshine set, and stamped flourishes from inkadinkadoo, then cut it out with a Spellbinders Nestabilities die.  I stamped the flourishes both in Crumb Cake ink from Stampin' Up, and more Delicata ink.

The backgrounds stamp is from Ditto, and I got that pup at Michael's for $1.99!!  Love that!  The ribbon is from the dollar bin at Michael's too.  The button is an old one, and the twine is some random stuff from AC Moore.

This is actually the THIRD in a series using that embossing folder.  I made two others, that are more, Autumn/Thanksgiving themed.  I'll show you more of those next time.

More Summer Birthdays

I am really NOT a summer person.  I like the colors, and the sunshine and the long days, and all the flowers.  I DO NOT like the HEAT.  Re my last post about Michigan summers....yeah.....Not with this horrific heat wave we're having!  Lawdy, can we get us some SEPTEMBER already??

ANYHOW....

My nephew/godson Jared had his birthday, and I made him this card--

I was kind of digging this design, because the image happens at the bottom third of the card.  I don't think I find that happening most of the time. 

This card started with a base of SU card stock, with some layers of cut and punched MME Fine and Dandy Boy DP.  I did some detail with yellow and white twine from We R Memory Keepers.

I stamped Jenny Bowlin Studios seal stamp in two colors to create a sun on some SU daffodil delight cs, and circle cut it with a spellbinders die and my Cuttlebug. 

I die cut some clouds with my A*muse studio clouds duo die and sponged them with Memento cantalope ink to make them look like a sunrise, then popped them up with some foam tape.  That little kiss of aqua behind the sun is a circle sticker from Paper Source.

The truck is SU's Loads of Love set, and the dude and presents are from the Loads of Love extender set.  I hand drew the little swirls that look like exhaust/movement.  I stamped the truck both on the card stock and a piece of DP, then cut out the DP one and pieced it on top of the stamped image.  I used copics to color things in.  I mounted the whole thing on some random gray cs, and mounted it up with foam tape.

The inside looked like this--

Here I used sentiments from SU, both from the Loads of Love set (duh), and from Happiest Birthday Wishes (double duh)..
I repeated the use of that seal stamp to make my sun, and I used a piece of smashbook tape to help attach the blue banner piece.
I hand drew a border around the yellow cs with a superfine tipped marker.  I like how it personalizes it a little.

So-  That's my birthday card!

Mr Cardmaker is (clearly) in a Punchy Mood

So, after showing you the card made with my new EK Tools punch HERE, I felt a kinship with the punch, and had to go further.  I felt the big loopy shapes really lent itself to a super feminine card, and I had to explore the possibilities.

I made this--

This is on SU cardstock, and the DP is My Mind's Eye.  The white card stock is PTI.  The sentiment stamp is also SU, and the die is Spellbinders Labels Four.
I hand inked the sentiment stamp (yes, it's one stamp) with Tombo and Crayola markers.  Who'da thunk my old OLD Crayola markers could be useful?  Love them!
The hearts are punched with a heart punch from the dollar bin. and I got them to line up by just sliding the punch down the strip as I went.  No guesswork! 
I used the circles that fell from the scallop punch to back them.  Much easier than trying to line up punched hearts, and no waste!  Love that.

Speaking of the circles that fell from the scallop punch, I used more of them on the inside--

Whoa, bit of a blur.  Sorry about that.
I stamped the sentiment (SU) first, then did the tiny circles. I found it really easy to place the stamped circles on top of what was already there.
As you can see, I am putting more effort into the insides of the card lately.  I am gonna get the biggest bang for my extra twenty cents postage that I can!

He's BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK......

Yes, indeed, fellow crafters, stampers, and scrappers, Mr. Cardmaker has returned.  Whoopie, probably...

Anyway, the move went/is going really well, despite the fact that I have no job.  However, we are fine, and I am hoping to make a go of some sort of card business, once I get THAT part of my life set up.

I have a ROOM!  It has nothing but a table so far, and it also doubles as guest room #2, but it's mine!  I hope to show you how all that progresses.  Stay tuned.  PLEASE!   (I did lose TWO followers in my absence.  Wah, I say. Wah, indeed.

But I am in need of stamping buds in my new home!  I feel lonely.  If you are anywhere in the Detroit area, or know of folks there who are ready to welcome a man into their midst, please clue me in.

Meanwhile, I have a card to share with you all today. 
I made this--

Clearly, I bought a new punch!   This is an EK Success (or is it tools) punch, and it's SO big and chunky, and I LURVE this!!!  It that an amazing scallop or what???  The DP is all My Mind's Eye, and the base is, ummmmmm.....Ok, I forget.  The white is PTI, and the star punch is Fiskars.  The Birthday stamp is SU, and the pearls are $1.00 bin pearls.

So this is how it's folded--

I sliced about two inches off the bottom of my 4.25"x 5.5" card.  I popped the white up with foam tape to give the star some dimension.  I used a copic marker bg000 to fill in the "I" in Birthday.

It looks like this inside--

I used the insides of the circles that were punched out for the scalloped edge to stamp the sentiment (SU) on.  I think this is a really happy card, and still okay for a man, I think.

So, I guess I'm back!  I will show you some more girly stuff next time.

Mr Cardmaker is All Set

Here in New England, when you don't want what's being offered to you, instead of saying "no thanks", people tend to say, "I'm all set."  I don't get this.  I also don't get/like/appreciate/admire using "no problem" instead of "you're welcome", or even "my pleasure", which is my own prefered phrase.

Anyway, putting my soapbox aside, I made this set--

 These are A2 (4.25"x 5.5") bases, with 4"x 4" white cards attached to them.  I used GinaK Designs "Garden Fresh" set, and My Mind's Eye "Ooh La La" 6x6 paper pad to create these.  To do the carrots, I masked and stamped three of the carrot image, then paper pieced them, popping the center carrot off the surface with some foam adhesive.  You can just see where I used an edge punch to do a pierced scallop edge.

 The red of the mellon is popped up on this one.  Same edge treatment on all of the bases; hard to make out in the photos.

 I love these pears.  I was worried about them at first, because the "skin part prints the color of the ink, and I didn't want to switch away from the black I had been using, but the patterned paper with a bit of green and lots of white carries it all off, I think.

 For the peas, I did a two level dimensional treatment.  The peas are popped 1/8", the pod is up 1/4".  I like the way it looks.

 For this one, I had to mask off the core part of the stamp in order to get a "whole" apple look.  Yum!

The "pulp" part is popped up on the dotted one, and the "pits" are above those.  I am just about "fussy cut" out!!!
The white card stock is from PTI.  These cards don't stand by themselves so well.  I really don't care so much about that.  This may be my favorite thing I have made to date.

Mr. Cardmaker has had his "Thinking Yarmulke" on...

 Progress is a good thing, especially when it comes to my Christmas projects.  I made this little notepad a while back for my SIL.  I made more.  These are them (they?).

These have more good stuff all over them than the original.  I was under a time crunch on that one.  You can see it and what the insides of all of them looked like HERE. 

As you can see, these are multi-denominational.  My SIL Andee will be getting the Hanukkah one.
I also worked hard to keep the snow theme prevalent, but those stickers from K&CO's Life's Little Occasions were too hard to resist.  I made the medalion on the non-Jewish one, with some SU and EK Success punches, and a stamp I found somewhere along the way.

Speaking of things Hanukkah, I also made a card.  It looks like this--

I made this using some candle stamps I got from Ditto.  I have used them primarily as birthday candles, but they dress up really nice for Hanukkah. 

I stamped these with Delicata gold ink.  LET me TELL you how much I love this ink!!!  It is so rich in color, and it looks like it has been embossed all on it's own.  SO pretty.

I tore the edges of my blue card stock, (some of my discount stuff....shh, no one will ever guess!) and inked it with some Night of Navy ink from SU.  Then I sprayed it with some  smooch spritz from SU.I also tore some shimmer paper just a bit larger and did the same inking. 

 I layered them onto a piece of gold Christmas paper (shhhhhh.....)that I edge punched and inked up with an EK Success and some more Delicata. 

I stamped the Star of David onto more of the Xmas paper, punched it with a 1 1/2" circle punch (Fiskars) and I inked the edges of that, too.  The card front is a piece of shimmer paper from DCWV, and the whole thing is on a white card base made with PTI card stock.

Lastly, I added the little gold pearls, and staggered them to help create the idea of a flickering candle. 

I have only one Hanukkah card to make each year, so far, and I love taking some time and making it just right. 

I have finally come up with my perfect sketch and image to finish up my cards for this season.  I'll show you them next time!  To say I am relieved is a HUGE understatement.

Mr Cardmaker is a Thankful Guy...

My time for blogging sure gets awfully short when I have to MAKE things instead of blog!!! 
I have been up to my armpits in Christmas cards, so it has taken me a while to get to these Thanksgiving cards that I want to share with you.

I pumped most of these out in one looooooooooong day.  I really have to train myself to craft while sitting, or at least, perching on a stool at my counter. 
Anyhoo--

I made this--

This was mostly about the DP, as you can see. 
I went a little coocoo with the brads, but it worked out just fine.  The zigzag was done with an ek success punch.  The sentiment is from Inkadinkadoo, the Harvest Expressions set.
The card stock is from SU, DCWV, and the DP is Me & My Big Ideas. Brads and ribbon are AC Moore. 
This card is actually much nicer than the photo, now that I'm looking at both....oh well. 

Kinda simple.  

Then I made this--
This was made on SU River Rock CS, and I stamped it with River Rock ink to make the background with Inkadinadoo's Autumn Foliage set.  Then I used the same image on a piece of white CS (GinaK Designs Pure Luxury 120#) inked with the same River Rock on the greens, but with an orange Tombo pen on the pumpkins.  Then I overstamped that with the sentiment, which was also inked with River Rock, but then I used a crayola green marker over it to get the sentiment to stand out.  die cut the whole thing out with a Spellbinders die and my Cuttlebug, and I inked the edges with some inkbox brown while it was still in the die.  I also edged the cardbase, while I was at it.I added a loop of orange ribbon (AC Moore) and the rhinestones (AC Moore again), and that was that.

This is the same idea with different stamps from the sets.  This background was done with versamark ink on GinaK Designs CS, and the pumpkin was stamped onto some soft yellow scrap and decorated with some orange Stickles.  I just used a corner punch here, instead of dies.

This is another quick one. This is an image from Inkadinkadoo, again....from the dollar bin, this time. The sentiment, I believe, is StudioG, but I may be wrong. (I can't find it to check at the moment. You should see my mess....)

The card stock is SU!, and the DP is M&MBI. Ribbon and bling form AC Moore.

This card also has a homemade background paper, using some StudioG stamps with SU River Rock ink on River Rock CS.  I really like how subtle this effect is.  I added a strip of M&MBI dp to the lower portion, and then added a ribbon (AC Moore dollar bin.  What else?).  The image is GinaK Designs, from the Enjoy the Sunshine set.  I colored this with copics, then cut it out with a labels four die from spellbinders, and used the same river rock ink to edge this while still in the die.  This makes a really pretty frame around the image.  I used brown on the outside edge to further punch it up.  This was mounted with foam tape.  I then stamped the sentiment first in orange, then in brown.  This gives it a shadowed effect.  I kind of like the sentiment put in on the vertical.  Change it up!  The buttons were a gift from my pal Michelle, and I used little strips of paper to make the stitching instead of twine or floss or something.  This seems easier for me for some reason.

Now, this one you may remember from when it was just a pumpkin--I layered up some of the papers I used previously, and added some buttons, and some Jolies leaves.  (Uh, I DID try to hide the "I" again, but things didn't quite work out....sorry about that!!)  This is a HUMOROUS card, not a "poison pen" thing by any means.  Oh PUH-LEASE--Like I would put THIS much work into someone I didn't like.  Riiiiiiiight.......

Those are most of my Thanksgiving cards.  The others you've already seen, or they didn't photograph so well.  I liked them, and I think the people who will get them will like them too!

Some Kinda Colorful

My dear friend Betty Ann Grove had a birthday, and I did a challenge at StampTV in the past month or so, so I wanted to quickly share some projects with you.

For Miss Grove, a wonderful 80+ gal with a TON of get-up-and-go, I made this--

I do love a circle.  Clearly.  This was made on a base cardstock from A*muse Studio, with CS and DP from SU.  The image is GinaK Designs, and I colored it with colored pencils, and used glossy accents on the flowers.  The pearls and ribbons are from AC Moore, the dollar bins, and I used an ek success punch and a Sizzix embossing folder on the orange cardstock.   Bright and fresh, just like Miss Grove!

Then, for a rainbow challenge at StampTV, I made this--

I like this one.  I used an image from Ditto, and colored on the stamp with crayola markers.  Who knew they would work on stamps?  The image is from SU, the Perfect Words set, and the DP that I used to make the bargello look at the bottom is all from SU, too.  The base is GinaK Designs Kraft CS, and I used a white gel pen to make the stitching lines.  I used SU Ballet Blue on the edges of my white CS and on my label (spellbinders Label Four), and used some baker's twine from The Paper Source to tie it all down.  I found my rhinestones in several different places, mostly from the box of HUNDREDS I bought at a yard sale for a dollar!

The bargello technique looks hard, but you merely adhere strips of DP to a piece of CS, cut it into strips going the other way (so you have all of your colors in one strip) and then arrange them in a pattern and trim to fit.  Looks like a quilt or something, right?

Somebody Sang "Be Our Guest" to Me.......

I am always on the interwebs, looking for instruction and inspiration, learning new ideas all the time.  What I like BEST is finding those souls out there who not only are wicked talented, but are also SUPER generous.  These are the people who do hundreds of free online tutorials, and expect nothing in return, other than a peek at what you, yourself are doing with the info. 

Enter Melanie Muenchinger.  Melanie (not Mel, thank you) is a very talented designer and artist, as well as a wife and mother, and a HUGE support system for this burgeoning cardmaker.  I "met" this super talented gal at GinaK Designs StampTV, through our chatting back and forth during a release party, and by commenting on each other's work over these few months.  When I won a prize with my FIRST posting at StampTV, her Gifts from the Sea set was my pick out of everything else there.  I talk about it and show you a sample in my blog post, Spoils of the Winner. 

She is a such a super inspiration to me, and SO kind and supportive.  In fact, and HERE'S THE BIG, BIG NEWS!!!!, Melanie has asked me to be a guest designer for her JUST released stamp set The Vine.  I got this email from her from out of the blue, and she asked if I would be interested in getting a sneak peek at the new set, and would I like to have one?   WOULD I?  (hair lip, hair lip....)   I am such a fan of her work, of COURSE I wanted to work with this new set!!!

Next thing I know, the stamp set arrives on THE DAY of the release party, and I quick-like-a-bunny whip up a card with this set and post it HERE (lousy photo with my phone) at StampTV during the party, thinking I am getting the scoop on everybody.....SUDDENLY, other people are congratulating me on being Melanie's GUEST DESIGNER.  Wha?  What's that?  Hey, that's a cool thing, right?  HEY! I'm hanging with the cool kids!  (And if you know me, you know that is so NOT me...)

ANYWAY---I AM a guest designer!  You need to scoot over to Hands, Head and Heart, and see my sample card that I did with The Vine.  I'll wait for you right back here.  Go on.....(but come right back....)

Okay!  So you're back!  Wasn't that FUN?  Isn't she amazing?!   SO, while you were gone, I made these--

 On a GinaK Designs Pure Luxury 120# white cardstock base, I versmarked the vine image several times, and embossed with clear embossing powder.  I then sponged on Studio G ink to make the background, leaving the center brighter than the edges.  I stamped the vine onto green cardstock from The Paper Co., and on green plaid DCWV paper, and cut them out, and did the same with the flowers.  Then I layered everything together, popping up just about 2/3 of everything with foam squares.  I think I counted 27 squares in all!!  Then I used Stickles to glitter up the flower centers.  The sentiment was done with the same ink as the background.  I had such a great time, adding "just a few more" flowers for about 30 minutes.  Luckily, I had just bought some new foam squares, so I had no issue with running out of them!

On this card, I again used GinaK Designs 120# white for the base, then layered up pink and green cardstock from The Paper Company. This is a value pack of paper, and while it's not really the best for making card bases, I really like it for layering.   

I used a piece of light green CS from DCWV, and ran it through my ever trusty Cuttlebug with the Swiss dot embossing folder, and did the punched edge with an EK punch. I layered that with a piece of DP from AC Patterned Papers, the "Play" set on top.  Don't you love the Nestabilites Labels Four die with that paper?!  Works perfectly with the sentiment, too.  I sponged versacolor Split pea on the white piece while the die was still on to get the pretty framed edge.  I colored and cut three stamped images of the flowers out of the same CS I used to layer up the background, and did the same with the vine from the green.These are stamped with Memento Tuxedo Black ink, and I filled in the designs with Inkssentials Glossy Accents for some shine, and again popped it all up with foam squares.    

 Did you like the one I did at Melanie's blog?  They are all really different, right?  I love how versatile stamps can be.  This set also coordinates with Melanie's Branching Out set, also available at GinaK Designs., so the possibilities are just about endless. 

I could not be more honored to do this, my first Guest Designer spot, with Melanie, and I have to let the world (or at least you, dear reader) know that she has been, continues to be a great mentor and inspiration. 

Having this opportunity has revved up my inspiration level to a hot 11, and I hope I did her artwork proud.  Many thanks to her, and especially to you for stopping by.  Come back again!

Dang It All.....

I have to confess, it never is a fast process for me to make a card.  I can throw something together sometimes, but for something I really like, I usually can spend two+ hours on it. 

That's why it makes me CUCKOO when I find an error or a flaw in my project in the last ten seconds of production!  The litany of arghs and curses (yes, much as I try, the potty mouth does occur sometimes) is enough to send the dog heading for cover.

Example. 



Cute, right?  It took some time to figure out which punch on which edge, where does the ribbon happen, how about that swiss dot stuff?  Here, there, where?   Sweat, snort , layer......Carefully now with that ribbon ruffle.....whew.  Hey this looks pretty good....

Hey.....

Wait a minute....

What is THAT?
What is that LUMP on the top of my card?  LOOK at that...(it's in the pic, with the "dang it" next to it.)

What IS THAT???

I checked.  Nothing under there.  What the ...???

Apparently it's a flaw in the card stock.  Of all the crazy things.  Well, I am just OVER that!

OK, Mister Cardmaker.  Deep breath, Friend.  CLEARLY, we will not be chucking this one in the bin.  HOW are we gonna fix it?

OH YEAH!  I have MORE PAPER!!
