Mr Cardmaker Figures it Out

Do you ever find, in your stamp collection, that sentiment stamp that you look at and say, "WHAT am I going to do with you?"   Well, I bought Stampin Up's Smarty Pants set ages ago.  I really had just about signed off on it as a "what was I thinking?" moment when I ran across it, and decided to challenge myself.

I made this-

I am NEVER one to feel obligated to stick to one stamp set when I'm making something (uh, unless somebody's gifting me the set and asking for samples to show).  If the image works, I'm pulling it out!  The clouds and the orange sun rays that are peeking out from behind the vellum are from two Papertrey Ink sets, (Up, Up and Away, and Funky Florals) and the birds are from Melanie Meunchinger's Gifts from the Sea set at GinaK Designs.

Doing the clouds was an interesting exercise.  The darkest ones are actually done with pink ink, not orange, and after stamping the first row, I just kept going up and up, letting the ink get softer as I went along.  I did the same pink with a flower stamp to make the sun's rays.  Totally reads orange.

The grass die is from Amuse Studio.  That bugger is tough to work with, because it almost always makes a mark on the bottom of the cardstock you're cutting.  Putting it through the Cuttlebug with an embossing folder fixes that problem!  That's a green ribbon, darker than the one in front, separating the layers of grass, btw.

It's pretty hard to see in this photo, but the yellow circle living under the vellum has also been dry embossed, Swiss dots this time, and that little yellow brad holds it all together.  Foam adhesive pops it off the surface.

I think it looks like some scene from the Serengeti or something, minus the rhinoceros.  Sooooo...for what occasion is this appropriate?  And for whom?

Is this suitable as a graduation card?  I guess the sentiment could be one of those things you'd shout after someone, before adding, "...and don't let the door hit you in the ass!"
Graduation card, it is!!!  ( I promise I WON'T put that on the inside.  Wouldn't that make a GREAT stamp, though?)

Now that I think about it, it could be a good card for someone starting a new job, or even, HEY!  How about your local doc who's about to do a Doctors Without Borders stint?  Or a teacher? Ok, so this is pretty applicable, after all.  Cool.

Thanks for stopping by!

Friday Fix 2

So, it seems that I do indeed make enough "wop wop" cards to continue with this "Friday Fix" idea!
While I ponder whether that is really a good or bad thing, let's forge ahead!

Anyway, I made this--

This is done with Papertrey Ink's Up Up and Away stamps and dies, and A*Muse Studio's Cloud Duo dies.  I used the cloud stamps to make what should be treetops there on the bottom.  Really, not a bad card, but just nothing really special about it.  Yawn, even.

So, I got out some patterned papers, and the cloud dies and got to work making this more interesting.
Now, my grand scheme is to be able to make stuff better without having to rip stuff apart. Time will tell, as I go on, whether or not this will be possible.  Stay tuned.

Anyway, here's what I came up with-

Better, right?
There's just more "There" there. Why?

The patterned clouds give you a more eye-catching visual, not to mention that more clouds are just "more" to look at.

The "treetops", whether your eye sees them as trees or just ground or bushes or whatever, have a stronger presence, and makes the whole "airborne" feeling of the balloons even stronger. I love that I got so much "landscaping" done from only two die cuts! (and the award for most quote marks in a single post goes to.....!)

No really huge changes here, and that, is my point.  Often, it doesn't take a huge amount of changes to improve your work.  Sometimes, it just wants a little "flair"!  (Yes, I used them again.  Keep on reading, I may do it yet again!)

So, dig out some of those cards you aren't sending because you just don't love them, and get your flair on.

More to come!

Thanks so much for dropping by!
Happy Weekend!
All Best-
"Richard"

Mr. Cardmaker is Getting (Senti)Mental

Last week was a big one for taking down and storing all the shiny Christmas goodness that makes the house so warm and pretty for the holidays.  Boy, does your house look as lonely and boring as mine after you put everything away?  Boo, hiss...

Anyhow, I did start the year with a card project, but it has taken until now for me to get the photos ready to post.
Nephew Elliot has his 19th birthday (don't EVEN get me started on THAT span of time) on Friday, and the family gathered this past Friday to celebrate, since he's back to college this week.  He's the big skier in the family.  (You may have seen THIS POST last January for him,and if you haven't, check it out!).  I try to make him a card that has snow and thoughts of skiing in it, even if there are no actual skis to be found.

I made this--

This started with a 4"x4"  piece of Stampin'Up cajun craze striped  DSP, with a circle out of the middle using a Spellbinders die.  I then cut a slightly smaller circle out of a 4"x4" piece of light blue paper from the rack at AC Moore.  I think it's a Bazzill Basics sheet.  Those two pieces were layered together.
Then I cut a piece of Nearly Navy DSP (again, SU)to 4"x4", and stamped with a snowflake die from PTI's In the Meadow set, and I heat embossed it with some holographic embossing powder from Paper Source.

I tore some scraps of white shimmer cardstock for PTI into strips, leaving lots of high and low places in each strip.I highlighted them with some Stickles, and when it dried, I layered them onto the blue piece, using glue and foam adhesive.  I just found a set of two mini punches at Target, and I used the tree punch to create the tiny trees.  I added snow to each tree with my handy-dandy white gel pen.  I added those to the scene with glue and more foam adhesive.  Then I added the circle cut pieces with foam adhesive, to act as a frame for my winter scene. That was all then layered onto a 4 1/4"x 4 1/4" piece of chocolate brown piece of card stock.

To do the clouds, I took scraps of two different shades of gray card stock, as well as some silver glitter paper (from Michael's), and die cut several clouds with my A*Muse Studio Cloud Duo dies.  I sponged some gray ink onto the bottoms of the clouds, and added some Stickles for more shine.  I adhered some clouds to the blue sky, and some to the outer circles, using both glue and more foam adhesive.  I like that the glitter clouds are just peeking out, showing off their "silver lining!"  Last, I added some snowflakes punched out of vanilla DCWV glitter paper with my new Martha Stewart snowflake punch-around-the-page set.  I like this one, because it punches two different sized snowflakes!

The sentiment is taken from PTI's Winter Penguin set, and that is stamped in black Archival Ink onto some of the lighter gray card stock, and layered onto a circle of brown card stock.  I used my Sakura glitter pen to trace a shiny outline around the gray piece, then I adhered the whole thing to the card front, and then adhered THAT to a white card base.

So, sort of elegant, fun and shiny, right?  Well, I just can't leave good enough alone.

I had to mix it up a bit, by adding my own special brand of irreverence to the inside.

I did this--

I did the (ahem) sentiment on my computer, and printed it out on some card stock.  I cut it into a strip, and layered it onto scraps of paper used on the front of the card, then cut it all out with a Labels Four die from Spellbinders.I edged it just a touch, and then adhered it to the inside of the card.

Elliot liked this card a whole bunch, though I am not sure he appreciated the jokester in me so much.  Some people get me, and some don't.  Oh well.  I got a million of 'em, folks!

All in all, a pretty good way to kick off 2013's card making.

Hey, thanks for stopping by.  I hope you got some inspiration, and maybe a laugh.
All Best to you in 2013!
Richard

Mr Cardmaker is a Make-It-Work Kinda Guy

So, my dear friend and SIL Jan had a birthday.  I made her a gorgeous set of cards and a box to hold them.  I was in a hurry, and never took pictures.

This is the part where I hang my head and shake it miserably.

HOWEVER!
I made her a birthday card, and I DID take pictures of THAT!

It looks like this--

Cute, right?  Those clouds, courtesy of my A*Muse Studio Clouds Duo dies are double layered--
A layer of vellum that is adhered on the inside of the card, and then the patterned paper that serves as an overlay.  There's also the flags, thanks to My Mind's Eye, and stamping (Studio G) and copic coloring, and some really nice leaf things I created with card stock, punches, and a bit of gold embossing powder.  Oh yeah, and those cute little photo corner things.  Jan bought me the punch, so of course, I had to use it on her card...

ANYWAY!
Those clouds should have NEVER looked like that.  Okay, okay, they look really nice and all....

BUT!  And this is a BIG but!  Not to be confused with my own big butt....but I digress...

The clouds were originally meant to be a reverse die cut, showing some lovely patterned paper (also MME) behind, as you opened the card.  However, my Dear Partner failed to understand the concept, and wrote his personal message ALL OVER the area that was supposed to be clouds!  ARGH, I say!  ARGH!!!!!!

Well, I stared at the dang thing for about 15 minutes before I came up with the solution.  I did make good use of the time, heaping copious amounts of guilt upon said DP.

When I finally did come up with the solution, I quickly got it all together, and was able to tuck it into DP's luggage.  Oh yes, did I mention the time crunch of the impending car to the airport that I had to beat?  No WONDER I didn't get to take photos of the card set and box I made her.

Anyway. she loved everything, and no one was the wiser...well, no one but my little frayed NERVES.

I guess it goes to show that things are RARELY really ruined, unless the dog or cat or kids get hold of them.  I have none of those at the moment, so no excuses for me!  A little creativity goes a long, long way!

Thanks for stopping by!
Happy Thanksgiving to my US readers!!

This is Only a Test-er Card

So, I have been musing this idea of making sellable cards, and I have been trying to design something that I can recreate easily.  Of course, making something that people will want to buy would be good, too.

Anyway-  The samples begin.

I made this--

I used my Cloud Duo dies from A*Muse Studio, and cut several clouds from white card stock scraps.
One of them became the shape I used to sponge clouds onto my 4"x5" piece of PTI white cs.  I used Memento Cantelope ink for the clouds.  I then used a sponge dauber with some blue ink (was it Memento Summer Sky, maybe?) on the clouds, but they totally didn't work with the background, so I used the cantelope on top of it.  You don't usually see green clouds, but living in the Midwest, you see some crazy colored clouds during tornado season, so I kept on going!
I stamped the sentiment (from SU) twice, in order to get that shadowed effect.

The grass is on SU designer series paper, and was cut with a grass die, again from A*Muse Studio.  I cut about 1/2" from the bottom of my card front, and only adhered the bottom of my grass strip to the bottom of the inside of the card.  Then I tucked the edge of the card front behind the grass.  I think it's a fun way to hold the card shut.  Here's a detail of the card flap, opened--

To finish everything up, I adhered the clouds in place with some adhesive and some foam tape, mounted the white piece onto some old wild wasabi stock, and adhered it to the card base. (the base is made from, I think, PTI Summer Sunrise.  I have a multicolor pack from them, and I think it is that)

Okay--
SO the reason I sort of like this one is that doing the background and the clouds was FAST and EASY.  I also think the grass idea is different, and people might like that.  I can also play with other colors, like melon mambo and different grays and pinks and blues.

SO!  Feedback me up, dear reader!  I need some help!  How much would you pay for this (in the days when you weren't doing it yourself, that is)?

More samples to come!  I should be very pro-blogger-ific this week!

Thanks so much for stopping by!
All Best--

Mr Cardmaker is an Anniversary Guy

Twenty-one years today.  That's how long I've been with my DP, Charlie.  Last year, for the Big Twenty, we went to PARIS!!!  Ooh, la la, fo' sho'!!  This year, after moving to Michigan, and all the MIL health drama (which always comes with EXPENSE, don'tcha know), we are staying home and having a nice dinner out.  Can't wait!

We are not big gifts-for-anniversaries people, although I did get a lovely bunch of irises this morning.  I made him a card (as you do).

It looks like this--

So, while in Paris last year, I picked up these SWEET little Moulin Rouge windmill paperclip things while at Montmartre.  I THOUGHT I had gotten Eiffel Tower ones.  I planned this card to have a nice wire Eiffel Tower clip on it.  THAT'S why I have the cityscape right there with the natural environment.....Bleh.
Anyway, he got the idea, and he really liked this card.  It TOTALLY reminded him of Paris, which is what I was going for, so I guess it all worked out in the end.

This windmill moulin actually started out not so ROUGE, and not nearly so sparkly.  It actually started out as a plain, paperclip colored moulin.  I went after it with my R29 Lipstick Red Copic marker, which I dried with my heat tool.  Then I pounced my Versamark pad onto it and covered it with my holographic embossing powder, which I reheated to make it stick.  Warning--I DID get some red ink on my Versamark pad during this.  Hopefully, it won't transfer.

So, to make the card, I started with a base of PTI orange zest cardstock.  Added a layer of a sort of rust colored cs, then a piece of My Mind's Eye Out of the Blue DP.  I like the sky and the balloons!
I used an old script background stamp with some SU crumbcake ink to "french" it up a bit.
I punched a circle of yellow dp scrap to make a sun, using a Studio G $1 stamp, and red and orange inks.
I used Jillibean Soup's You Move Me set to get the skyline.  I sort of twisted this stamp around when I put it on my acrylic block, in order to get a wavy line.  I fussy cut it out and then adhered it to a piece of DP (with the trees ) that I hand cut into a wavy line.  Before I attached the to one another, I die cut some grass from some Old Olive (SU) dsp, and pieced that around the edge.  after putting all that together, I popped it off the surface with some foam tape.  Then I added the paper clip.

The sentiment is from Papertrey Ink.  I also curved it as I attached it to my acrylic block, so I could follow the shape of my sun.  That took care of the outside.

I wrote a lovely personal message on the inside.  I can't show you all of that.  What I can show you is the rest of the sentiment and what I did with it.

It looks like this--WAY magnified.

This was about 2"x3" in real life.  The sentiment is, again, PTI, but the "happy anniversary" is by Stampin' Up.
I used the same papers and background stamp, but I also fussy cut balloons out from the BACK of the DP used for the background, and I used an A*Muse Studio cloud duo die to cut out a cloud.  I used the die to trace around in order to make the outline around the die cut, so it would look a bit more like the clouds on the dp (see the front of the card).  I recreated the hill and the grass, and mounted it on a scrap of dotted paper.

So, that's my card.  Hope you like it.

PS--I have a light box now!  I am hoping it will greatly improve the quality of my card pics.  I made it myself, from a storage bin, some clip lamps, a poster board, and some white fabric.

Thanks for stopping by!

Mr Cardmaker is a Begging for Advice Guy

So, here's the plan--

  • I design a bunch of samples that I think I can recreate in a great number.  Birthday, Holiday, Wedding, etc...Maybe even some boxed sets would work here.
  • I make a presentation book of these samples, and take them to boutiques and gift stores in my area.
  • I send copies of these samples to gift stores in the resort areas to my north.
  • People are (at least) mildly wowed, and order my cards, give me cash, and I get to do what I love and make money at the same time.

So, what am I missing here??  HELP Mr. Cardmaker.  There have to be THOUSANDS of things that I missed in this very sketchy plan, including things like angel policies (which really could be made simpler, folks!  And WHY doesn't everyone make a stamp that says "© mycompanyname" for this purpose??), marketing plans, production schedules, yadda, yadda, yadda....

ANY and ALL advice would be SO appreciated!

But back to cards and stuff--

My dear friend, Miss Betty Ann Grove, former star of the Broadway stage, had a birthday this past Sunday.  I made her this--

This is a pretty simple card, for the most part.  I used almost all SU! card stocks and DPs, with the exception of the light green piece.  That, I believe is by Fiskars, and I bought a single sheet of it ages ago.

The fun stuff happening here is all the die cutting I did.  I cut the oval (Spellbinders Classic Ovals), and then the grass with A*Muse Studio's grass die.

Then it begins to get tricky!

I used a Spellbinders Wonky Rectangles die to start the cut of my "hill" piece.  This was done by sticking just one edge under the cutting bar, and leaving the rest out of the way.  It didn't make a big enough cut, so I grabbed the oval die that I used for the yellow piece and used it to make the second "bump".  there was a tiny portion that didn't connect the two, so a quick snip with my Cutterbee snips took care of that.

I would NEVER have been able to make such clean cuts with my snips.  I definitely like how that happened to work out.  It definitely makes your dies work in a MUCH more flexible way!

Since I was going crazy with my dies, I used the wonky rectangle die to cut the white piece for my sentiment.  It had to work on this a while, because I was not thrilled with the results I was getting, but it all finally worked out pretty well.  I stamped it with a Think Big stamp from PTI with Memento Dandelion ink, and then edged the piece with a foam applicator in Memento Cantaloupe.

I used a Jenny Bowlin for Fiskars punch to make my bird from some pink DP, and adhered it to my sentiment, which I then popped up with some foam tape.

To finish up, I ran some blue card stock through the Cuttlebug with my swirls embossing folder, layered that on a piece of pink DP, and put the whole thing on a green card base.  Last but not least, I added some bling in the form of some sweet little felt and rhinestone flowers I got from the dollar bins at Michaels.

This is a fun card for a birthday, but I'm thinking I could also do this for Easter, or just as a spring card, since these colors certainly fit the bill.

Thanks so much for stopping by, and a BIG thanks in advance for the advice you have!
All Best-
Richard

A Little Digital Never Hurt Nobody

The other week, my DP Charlie had a wicked cold and had to fly off to Boston for the week.

I decided to make him a QUICK get well card before he left.

This is not as easy as it sounds.  Trying to help a sickie pack, make sure he has the proper medications with him, and hope that he's pumped with a good enough antihistamine that his head doesn't explode in mid flight doesn't give you a whole lot of time to be super creative.

However!  I sallied forth, and somehow managed to come up with this--

This is a 7Gypsies stamp, and the dots are by A*Muse Studio, from the Tini Time set.
The cardstock is SU! River Rock and the red is from The Paper Co. The DP is from PB&J, by Basic Grey.  I hand drew the black lines and shadows on the letters with a fine tipped Sharpie, and the ribbon is from AC Moore.  I chose to do the red and green because of the sort of "sickly" sensation it gives, and I thought the wavy and uneven lines, as well as the dots sort of give images of illness (at least, it does in my twisted mind!)

The best part, though is on the inside, where I ran over to my computer and typed out this sentiment in Word--

This font was free from kevinandamanda.com.  Check them out!  I LOVE this font, and I thought the dots over the O was so funny!  It reminds me of seeing spots before your eyes.  I used 80# cardstock so it would go through the printer.  It's not exactly perfect in spacing, but I WAS in a rush, and I actually have no clue how to make sure the spacing is right while on my computer.
If anyone out there has any clues about that, please let me know.  I really like making up my own inside sentiments, but have steered away from it because of my limited knowledge there.

He loved the card, and I had fun, even if I did have to rush it a bit.

Meanwhile, I had a birthday, and made some thank you cards.  I used the same 7Gypsies stamp, so I thought I would show you now.

I made this--

So, as you can see, WICKED simple.  I used Baja Breeze card stock from SU! as my base, cut to 8 1/2 x 4 1/4 and I ran the front through the cuttlebug with an embossing folder.
Now, this can be a tricky thing, because the embossing makes your card front SHRINK a tiny bit.  Be prepared to trim a tiny bit off the card back when you go to fold it over.

I then did a layer of DP, this is from My Mind's Eye.  I made over a dozen of these, and the DP changed on each of them, but they all came from the same paper pack.  I mounted this onto my base with foam tape. To this, I added a square of SU! Chocolate Chip card stock which I dry embossed with a different embossing folder.  Both folders have square patterns, so I think they work pretty well together.
I topped that with my sentiment on white cs, which I edged with Distress Inks Antique Linen.  I can't remember which green ink I stamped the sentiment in, but I think it might be ColorBox Chalk ink.

Like I said, simple simple.I think that there are just enough touches to show that care and planning was put in, but I was able to make many of them quickly.

Hey!
I am thinking about trying to start a cardmaking and SELLING business.  I am sort of weirded out about it, and can use ALL sorts of advice!  If you can help, or know someone who can, please let me know.

So, that's what I've been up to!
Thanks so much for stopping by.  I really appreciate you!

Mr Cardmaker is a Revisiting Kinda Guy

So, I am really a big, big fan of banners and flags, when used as a celebratory sort of thing.  Bright colors in the wind, flashing in the sunshine, just makes my spirits soar!

I have the banner punch from SU!, and I really like it so much.  I have the banner basics stamp set too, and I do use it sometimes, but I tend to like to use DP when I do use the punch.

Anyway, for my youngest brother Joshua's birthday, I made this--

I have all kinds of fun stuff on this card!

On the card base, I stamped with PTI Background Basics Medallions set, that really pretty (and SO easy to get great results from) medallion(duh) border at the bottom, and then rounded the bottom with a 1/2" corner rounder.  This is SU! More Mustard CS, btw.

Then I cut a piece of blue CS, Stamped the sentiment (GinaK Designs, Follow Your Dreams)in Night of Navy ink (SU!), and added the strip of DP (American Crafts Patterned Paper, the Play set) at the bottom.  I cut some clouds with A*Muse Studio Clouds Duo die, and Then cut the long banners from SU! Designer series paper, in both the Brights and Royals collections.  I used my SU! heart punch to do the hearts.

I arranged the banners and clouds, then adhered them.  Some I attached to the card stock, some I popped up with foam tape.  The hearts are adhered with the foam tape.  Last, I wound some red and white bakers' twine (Paper Source) around a couple of times, adhered the blue piece, and called it a day.

At this point, I thought it looked okay, so I put it aside.

THEN!

When I went to add my message and send it, I thought it looked kind of flat.  I remembered the additional layers I did on my Fourth of July card (seen HERE), and decided that I could beef this puppy up, too.

That's when I decided to add a heap more banner triangles to this project.  I went into my scraps and chose different papers than the ones I used on the card already.  (These are mostly DCWV, and AC papers, with one Fiskars paper, I think.)  I grabbed my banner punch and went to town, arranging the pieces as I went to look like the breeze had caught them.

I cut another length of red and white bakers' twine, and, using more foam tape, adhered the pieces to the card.

I am happy about this second shift of creativity.

I have decided to take a look at some previous cards that I am holding onto, and seeing if there aren't some other missed opportunities to add some wow factor.

I'll let you know if I come up with anything!

Thanks for stopping by!

More Summer Birthdays

I am really NOT a summer person.  I like the colors, and the sunshine and the long days, and all the flowers.  I DO NOT like the HEAT.  Re my last post about Michigan summers....yeah.....Not with this horrific heat wave we're having!  Lawdy, can we get us some SEPTEMBER already??

ANYHOW....

My nephew/godson Jared had his birthday, and I made him this card--

I was kind of digging this design, because the image happens at the bottom third of the card.  I don't think I find that happening most of the time.

This card started with a base of SU card stock, with some layers of cut and punched MME Fine and Dandy Boy DP.  I did some detail with yellow and white twine from We R Memory Keepers.

I stamped Jenny Bowlin Studios seal stamp in two colors to create a sun on some SU daffodil delight cs, and circle cut it with a spellbinders die and my Cuttlebug.

I die cut some clouds with my A*muse studio clouds duo die and sponged them with Memento cantalope ink to make them look like a sunrise, then popped them up with some foam tape.  That little kiss of aqua behind the sun is a circle sticker from Paper Source.

The truck is SU's Loads of Love set, and the dude and presents are from the Loads of Love extender set.  I hand drew the little swirls that look like exhaust/movement.  I stamped the truck both on the card stock and a piece of DP, then cut out the DP one and pieced it on top of the stamped image.  I used copics to color things in.  I mounted the whole thing on some random gray cs, and mounted it up with foam tape.

The inside looked like this--

Here I used sentiments from SU, both from the Loads of Love set (duh), and from Happiest Birthday Wishes (double duh)..
I repeated the use of that seal stamp to make my sun, and I used a piece of smashbook tape to help attach the blue banner piece.
I hand drew a border around the yellow cs with a superfine tipped marker.  I like how it personalizes it a little.

So-  That's my birthday card!

Thanks for stopping by!
Stay out of the heat, for heaven's sake.

Mr Cardmaker has a Lonely....

In my Pinterest travels, which now probably suck up no less than two hours each day, I came upon a card that had lots of birdcages, all filled with different birds.  It was really cute.  I did not bother to repin it, apparently, so I can't link to it.  However, it obviously left its impression on me.

I am thinking of my far away Mama this week, and I used the cage idea to make her a card.

I made this--

This is made on a GinaK Designs Kraft base, and I used My Mind's Eye  Quite Contrary paper to stamp my cages.  The cages are stamps from A*muse Studio, the Life is a Song set.  The fly away birds are from GKD, my friend Melanie Muenchinger's Gifts from the Sea set.  Oh yes, my panel backing piece is a random scrap, but the backing for my letters (which are Studio G) is done with SU Daffodil Delight.   The Button is from Basic Grey.

I popped the letters in the word "miss" up with foam tape, and used foam tape as well on some of the cages.

Simple card.  I was hoping the yellow would keep it on the cheery side, since it's not the most "up" of cards...

Mr Cardmaker has Thoughts of Spring

I got some lovely papers for Christmas from my DP.  I decided to put them and some stamps I hadn't gotten any ink on yet to work.  Besides, I'm cold, and I want to start thinking about Spring!

I made this--

This was made on an A*Muse Studio base.  I like the fact that their card stock has a white backing, especially for bases.  I DO wish they would come out with a heavier weight version, however, because once you get a layer or two, it is hard to get proper support .  A*Muse studio is known for their very simple styling, so they probably don't worry too much about tons of layers......anyway...

The DP is from My Mind's Eye.  I think.  Pretty sure.  Almost positive.
I cut strips, and ran them through the ol' Cuttlebug with a distressed stripes embossing folder.  I LOVE the effect it gave to the striped paper.  Each panel was backed with some SU basic gray cs, and I stamped the sentiment (SU) with Memento London Fog.  The flowers are chipboard pieces from  from Me & My Big Ideas.

I like the way the panels overhang the edges. I will use this for a birthday card, most likely.

Since I had everything out, I decided to make another one.
I made this-
Same base, ink, and stamp.  I added buttons from my randon collection, and a flower and ribbon from AC Moore's dollar bin.  The top of the base is run through the Cuttlebug with a Sizzix embossing folder that looks like gauze or netting.
Strangely enough, that ribbon is straight.  The embossing folder sort of warped the base a bit for the photo..  This is what I mean about wishing A*Muse made a thicker CS.  Maybe one day!

Thanks for stopping by!

Mr Cardmaker is a Quick-on the-Thanks Kinda Guy

Christmas came and went, and, at the moment, my condo is full of the (count them!) 14 storage crates (those 15 gallon babies) and 4 cardboard boxes that it takes to put the whole shebang away.  Oh yeah, we get hosed down with some Christmas around here!

Christmas day, however, we were so happy to have so many gifts from loved ones around the country.  Needless to say, I wanted to come up with a really nice thank you card for everyone so I could express my gratitude.

I came up with this--

Here is a really GREAT example of how that word "JUST" allows you to make a lovely, yet not-so-overworked and super-decorated card.  See it there in the sentiment?  Love that!

So, the base here is a 4 1/4" square, from PTI white card stock.  I love the 110# base weight.  I have used 120# in the past, and it is some really nice stuff, but I can never get it to stay folded, it's so thick!  Scor-Pal or not!  I now use my 120# for images I want to use my copics on.  Much better!

The blue cs is Baja Breeze from SU!, and it went through my devoted Cuttlebug with a swiss dot folder.  The designer paper is from My Mind's Eye, the Lost and Found pad.  LOVE this paper!  It has some really nice masculine patterns, and great colors--all very blue and brown and grey based stuff.  Pretty!

The envelope and the clouds were cut form the same collection of dp, and I used the envelope and cloud duo dies from A*Muse Studio. I popped the envelope up a bit with some foam tape.

The sentiment and note stamps are also A*Muse, from the Life is a Song set.  I am getting lots of use from that set!  I stamped them both with Rich Cocoa Memento ink.

I hand cut the tails on the sentiment strip, and edged it with some white ink.  I did the same edging on the piece with the notes.

I made 9 of these puppies, wrote them out and got them in the mail, PRONTO.  'Cause gratitude gets stale pretty quick.  Just sayin'.

Hey, nephew Elliot's birthday is coming up.  I have a great card coming along for that ski-crazed kid.  Stay tuned!

Thanks for stopping by for my first posting of 2012!!!

Mr Cardmaker is a Cagey Fellow....

I felt like I was really lucky to get my cards done and out this year.  GIFTS?!  You want me to make GIFTS!???   Ok, so I made those pad thingies, seen HERE, but those were meant to be PRE-Holiday gifts, because they were for Christmas lists.  Get it?

Anyway, my sister always sends me a lovely gift, even though we were supposed to be done with that years ago....I HAD to make her something, right?

SO I made these things--

This card collection was made with A*Muse Studio stamps, the Life is a Song set.  I liked all the different sentiments, and the cages are pretty, too.  I really wish I had taken a better close up of some of the cards, but I made and sent these babies out in one day, and I barely managed to get the pics I did get.

The card base is GinaK Designs Pure Luxury Ivory, in the heavy base weight.  I ran it through my Cuttlebug with a Sizzix hounds tooth folder.  The heavy weight paper really makes the embossing pop.

I then layered on pieces of DP from DCWV.  This paper was amazing for this project.  It was random words with definitions, and I managed to make some of the words work really well with the corresponding sentiments.  I even found the word "reminiscence" for my sympathy card.  I was so happy and amazed at how well it worked.

The image is on more Ivory, done with Memento Tuxedo Black ink, and the birds are Distress Ink, Broken China.  I added detail with a gray copic, and a black pen.
I tore the card stock, and edged it with SU More Mustard ink, and backed it with a torn piece of More Mustard paper, which I also edged in the ink.

Because I wanted these cards to be sent with no issue of extra postage, I didn't add any bling.  The only ornamentation is the little bit of paper piercing I did at the top right part of the image, and under some of the sentiments.  Simple.
I have to admit, I sense a slight balance problem with some of these cards.  Too much on the right side of the image, I think.....but, maybe I am just overly critical.  I tend to do that.

I then grabbed some envelopes and popped the whole shebang into a clear box, also from GinaK Designs.  The medium box easily (but snugly) held all six cards and envelopes.  The box is causing the glare in the pic above.   Sorry about that.

So, that's my ONE Christmas gift.  I have a calendar template on my computer, maybe I can get somethings together to be New Year's gifts.  Wait, those will need cards, too, right?  And then there's that thank you cards I have to make....Hoo BOY!!  I better get to work!!

Thanks for stopping by!  Your continued support is my best Christmas gift!!!

Mr. Cardmaker has been a Working Guy

Clearly, I have been conspicuously absent from the blog arena.  I have been a BUSY card maker!
I got some new, fun supplies from Stampin'Up!, and have been trying to put them to work.

I made these--

I ran this one thru the cuttlebug with a SU! Sizzix folder, and I tried to mask off the doily/snowflake.  Big fail!  I almost broke my Cuttlebug.  There is LESS embossing on the doily, but it definitely did NOT do what I wanted....

Let me say how happy I am that I do NOT have to send one person a thousand different cards, because it would surely kill me.  I am very happy to lots of variations on a theme!

These are all made with the Hello Doily stamp from SU!, and some white embossing powder.  I LOVE this stamp, and how much it fills up my card!  I cut around portions of the doily to give some emphasis in areas, but I rough cut them (as usual) because I think the doily would get lost without a tiny bit of framing.

I also did a touch of copic coloring in some of the letters.

The sentiment is from Studio G in the cards above.  Below is from Stampendous, the Holiday Home set.

Here is where I switched from stamping on Melon Mambo, and instead moved to patterned paper.  I love the combinations!!  These papers are American Crafts, Dear Lizzie set.  The shimmer paper is all DCWV.  The little snowflake punch is Martha Stewart, and the big one is SU!
The Merry Christmas above is punched out with the words window punch from SU.  I use this a LOT this season.  That, and the modern labels punch.  I'll show you those cards soon!
The sentiment above is A*muse Studio.
The tags here are done with GinaK Designs All Occassions Tags set, and Spellbinders grommet tags dies.  The sentiment is SU! Teeny Tiny Wishes.  The tag and the sentiment are both wet embossed to punch them up.  That frame above is one of those happy accident moments, where I used a leftover scrap to make a rectangle and got a fun little frame.  These things make me grateful for my two-way glue pen.

As you can see, my sentiments DO get to floating around just a bit.  Oh well....

I have plenty more cards to go, and more to show you.  Stay tuned.

Sorry for the brief amount of explanation here, gang, but I gotta get back to work!!!
More later, as soon as I can get them photographed!!!
I hope your cards are going REALLY well, and that PANIC MODE hasn't settled in at your house.  (I am not QUITE there yet, but I hafta get OFF this computer!)

Thanks for stopping by!

Mr. Cardmaker had BEST get busy...

So, my DP's sibs had their birthdays.  We met up with SIL Jan and her guy Ronny for Chinese and presents, and the morning before we went, I frantically made this--

(OK, I don't know what I did, but I can't seem to put my pics where I want them.  Please bear with me.)

This is a pocket tissue holder.  I used a template given to me by my friend Amy Corr, and went to town.  The base is some Mostly Mustard cs by SU!, and the dp is from M&MBI.  I used a scalloped square punch and a small circle punch to make the clasp-y thing, and I had some ancient chipboard cut outs that I inked up with some StudioG chalk inks.  The brads are from Michael's.  I love how it perfectly fit the center of the flower.

Here is a view of the inside.  I used the same inks as the ones I used on the flower, and I used some GinaK Designs stamps to make the design on the cs.  This is a cute and easy project.  Jan loved this.  I am making one for niece Jessica, who is coming to spend Thanksgiving with us.  I think I am about 90% done with it, but I need to get on it, since my list of stuff-to-do is about a million miles long.

Then, because the morning wasn't frantic enough, I made this, too--

Inside this puppy is a 2 1/2" by 8" notepad from PTI.  I used a piece of GinaK Designs onxy cs cut at 5 1/4" by 8 1/2", scored in the middle to allow for a depth of 1/8".  I attached the pad with some scor-tape to the inside, and used some snowflake stamps from ScrappyCat (from my Goodwill store, no less) and some K&Co stickers to doll it up a bit.  The whole thing is tied together with some white ribbon.  A red button on top of a white one, tied with some red and white twine finishes it all off.

The inside---This could CLEARLY get really all jazzed up with some rhinestones and other colors, but I was really pressed for time.  Oh yeah, I also stamped a snowflake in pale blue on each of the pages of the pad.  'Cause I'm decorative that way.  Yes, I am.  I have a pack of ten (I think) of these pads.  I will do more!!!

Then, I have still been struggling to come up with a Christmas card style that I love.  I made a bunch, and I have some ideas, but there's SOOOO much work to do between now and when I have to trot these babies to the post office.  Oh yeah, the cards...
I made these--
Ok, so the skinny on these bad boys---sorry I didn't do individual pics.  I just haven't got the strength...If you click on the pic, you will be able to see it a bit larger.

The base is PTI cs.  I like the weight (110#, I think), and the awesome price!!  $6.00 for 40 sheets.  Anyway, I am using American Crafts dp, shimmer paper from PTI and DCWV, and glitter paper from DCWV.  The sentiments are from A*muse Studio and SU!, with some StudioG thrown in.   The snowflake punch is Martha Stewart, and the label design is from GinaK Designs, cut out with Spellbinders dies.I also did some dry embossing with Sizzix and Cuttlebug folders, and the ribbon and bling are from various dollar bins.

Notice how there are only nine, count them, NINE cards so far??  I gotta get off this computer and go make some more RIGHT NOW!!!!

Thanks for stopping by, and have a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving!!  I am very thankful for YOU and your support!!!
All Best--

Mr. Cardmaker is a Birthday Card Making Guy

My sister, Lisa, has a birthday coming up on the 29th of this month.  Because I value my life, I won't tell you "how many" she's going to be, but she is just 14 months younger than myself, so you can figure it out, pretty much.

She is a very outgoing, fun girl, with friends and neighbors in and out of her house all the time.  This girl knows how to entertain.  With my reclusive self, it's hard to believe she's my sister.

Anyway, I made her this--

Cute and fun, right?  I think it suits her personality.  I made this card on SU Mostly Mustard card stock, stamped with images from A*muse Studio's "Tini Time" set.  I used Studio G inkpads.
The circles were cut from scraps of GinaK Designs white, and DCWV green cs with my Fiskars punches, and then inked with some colorbox ink.  I am sorry to say I threw the labels away for several of my colorbox pads, so I can't share the color.  Boo.  Pearls and ribbon from AC Moore (I swear, I LIVE in that dollar bin).

I stamped the sentiment on a scrap of SU Daffodil Delight, and popped it up with foam tape.  The 'tini image is mounted on SU Pumpkin pie.
I cut it out with my usual technique of leaving a white border around the image.  I like how it gives it more substance, and a little pop, especially when you back it with another color card stock.  I used Colorbox and Studio G ink on the martini, and crayola markers to do the cherry.  I popped it up higher than the sentiment with foam squares.

On the inside, I stamped "Olive you!" from the same set, and under it, I used SU's Teeny Tiny Wishes "Happy Birthday" stamp.  (No photo, sorry.)

I like the cheery colors, and the bubbly feeling from all the circles.
I hope she likes it, too!!

Thanks for dropping by!

Some Kinda Colorful

My dear friend Betty Ann Grove had a birthday, and I did a challenge at StampTV in the past month or so, so I wanted to quickly share some projects with you.

For Miss Grove, a wonderful 80+ gal with a TON of get-up-and-go, I made this--

I do love a circle.  Clearly.  This was made on a base cardstock from A*muse Studio, with CS and DP from SU.  The image is GinaK Designs, and I colored it with colored pencils, and used glossy accents on the flowers.  The pearls and ribbons are from AC Moore, the dollar bins, and I used an ek success punch and a Sizzix embossing folder on the orange cardstock.   Bright and fresh, just like Miss Grove!

Then, for a rainbow challenge at StampTV, I made this--

I like this one.  I used an image from Ditto, and colored on the stamp with crayola markers.  Who knew they would work on stamps?  The image is from SU, the Perfect Words set, and the DP that I used to make the bargello look at the bottom is all from SU, too.  The base is GinaK Designs Kraft CS, and I used a white gel pen to make the stitching lines.  I used SU Ballet Blue on the edges of my white CS and on my label (spellbinders Label Four), and used some baker's twine from The Paper Source to tie it all down.  I found my rhinestones in several different places, mostly from the box of HUNDREDS I bought at a yard sale for a dollar!

The bargello technique looks hard, but you merely adhere strips of DP to a piece of CS, cut it into strips going the other way (so you have all of your colors in one strip) and then arrange them in a pattern and trim to fit.  Looks like a quilt or something, right?

Thanks for checking out my projects!
Come back and see me, and feel free to leave me some feedback!  I am still learning here, y'all!
Take good care.

Mr. Cardmaker Keeps His Promises

Home again! And only the teensiest bit of jet lag!
SO many thanks to everyone who answered my survey (in the post below).  Your views are such a big help!

So, Paris was as amazing as everyone has said.  Even more so, since it was my and my DP's 20th anniversary trip.  (Uh, Dear Partner, not designer paper in this instance.)  We ate and WALKED (and walked and walked and walked) through every street, monument, and museum we could get our butts near, and stopped for the best coffee, bread (!!) and cheese (!!!) we've ever had along the way.  Often.  Lots.  SO often.  YUM.  Just sayin'.

ANYWAY, here are the pics I promised from that trip--

Great collage courtesy of Picasa.  This is such a great feature!  This is only a few of the pics out of over 300 we took, but you get a flavor of what we did.  Loved the Musee D'Orsay, and Versailles.  Those charming cottage pics were taken @Versailles, at Marie Antoinette's hamlet. She had this little village built so she could play farmer.  Nice, huh?  Just past the very ornate theatre she had built so she could pretend to be an actress.  No wonder the peasants revolted.

ANYWAY!!

I also promised you some pics of the sweet little cards I made for Halloween.  These things make me giggle...

I made these things--

Cute, right?  I cased one of the lovely ladies at StampTV for the genesis of the mummy and Frank, but I really changed them up.

These are cards with only card FRONTS--they don't open (or st least, not so much.)  Let me show you what I mean.

They do this--

I made the raven card first, having attempted to make a triangle card and making it way too small.  I punched out some circles with my fiskars circle punches, extra large and medium, I do believe, and layered them up on some black cs for the crazy eyes, and then adhered the triangle as a beak.  I used SU stamps from TeenyTiny Wishes and Smarty Pants, and got the greeting on the inside.  Two little punched black circles with a regulation hole puncher from my desk make the nostrils.  I added dots with my glitter pen for highlights in the eyeballs, layered it on some white, and this was done!

I felt there was only room needed to sign and give a little wish, so I left it as just the front.  Why not be different sometimes?  Oh yes, this card base is only 4" wide, which left me a bit of room to go off the edge and still fit in a regular A2 envelope!

The mummy is done by tearing and inking the edges of strips of ivory cs (use a piece of cs a bit wider than the base, so you can play with your placement) layered on some mustard cardstock, with more circle punches used to make the eyes and tongue.
Be sure to tear an extra strip to be used as your flap piece, and make sure to ink the edges of both sides of that one.

I crumpled the circle I used for the eyelids before cutting it to make them look old.  I used the same stamps for the sentiment, and adhered my flap piece to the back of my mustard cs before mounting the whole thing onto some olive cs.  Done and done.

For Frank, I really wanted him to have a flip top head.  To do this, I scored my olive green cs at 1/4", and 1 1/4"  I slid the black strip I used for hair (which was about 1 7/8") under the 1/4" fold, then stamped my greeting just under and above the second fold.  This kept things well hidden.
I hand drew a scar line both on the flap and the cardbase, and I hand drew the mouth.
The eyes are more punched circles, but I had the idea to punch the tiny holes out of black irises to make the highlights this time, and I inked the edges if the whites of the eyes with some red ink.  I like how that makes the eyes really pop.  Two little strips of black for the neck "plugs", an orange base, and this monster was all set.

And that other triangle card was an easy do, just some $1.00 Studio G stamps, a paper pieced house, a strip with the sentiment, and clouds made with my A*muse Studio Clouds Duo dies, inked with black to make them "ominous."  That one also has the SU sentiment stamps on the inside (yes this one has an inside.)  One of these things is not like the others......

So those are my Halloween cards!  I did buy MORE stamps for more cards, but I need to move along into some Thanksgiving, Fall Birthday, and yes, even get started on some Christmas ideas!

Speaking of Christmas ideas, I am having a heck of a time finding the right image stamps for both Christmas and Winter.  Not sure what I want, but my go to spots are leaving me kind of flat.  I am VERY much all set with sentiments; it's the images I need.  I am kind of non-traditional at Christmas, so I will probably do a couple-a-few with my Tini Time set from A*muse Studio, but I need MORE!!!  Ideas, anyone??  Please??

Hey, Thanks for stopping by and dealing with my ramblings.  So glad you're here!
All Best--

Mr Cardmaker is a Non-traditionalist, Christmas-wise...

With my fall birthdays covered, I need to start thinking about my Christmas cards....Yeah, I know Thanksgiving is first, and I definitely need some cards for that, but I pulled out some beautiful American Crafts Papers, the Dear Lizzie Christmas set, to be exact-ish, as well as some DCWV Shimmer stack and Linen stack papers, and got started on some prototypes.

I made this--

As you can see, this is not your red and green kinda card.  I dig colors that you don't see so much at Christmas.  These are Christmasy-ish.  Who cares? These are beautiful papers.

I layered the teal onto some white to give it some presence, and stamped and wet embossed the sentiment in white onto some teal shimmer cs.  This sentiment is from A*muse studio, the Holiday Greetings Inside and Out set.  This is a really nice set; big, substantial letters.  I like the shadow effect on the bigger type.

The snowflakes are done with a Martha Stewart punch out of cream glitter cs and pink shimmer cs.
The rhinestones are AC Moore, and the ribbon is a scavenged one from a floral bouquet.

Easy, I can do this idea in many paper combos, blah blah blah....

I made this one next--

I bough this sentiment stamp in Chelsea, NYC this summer, along with one that says "got snow?"  I edged the card stock strip with some pink (one of my SU stampin' spots) and popped it up on foam tape.  The pearl is from my ever trusty AC Moore.

The snowman is from Stampendous, the Holiday Home set.  I have used this set to make "New Home" cards, like the one seen HERE.  This snowman is so teeny-tiny, but I think he makes it look like a greater great outdoors.  He's colored with copics.

The cream cs is actually glitter cs, hard to see in the photo, and that's popped off of the pink with more foam tape. The pink is a shimmer stock that I ran thru the Cuttlebug with a Sizzix folder.  The clouds are an A*muse Studio die, and I ran those thru the Cuttlebug with the swiss dots folder.  Love me some texture!!  Add some baker's twine from The Paper Source, and I'm done.  (Don't you like the way the red works here?  I gotta add some more red in with these colors.....)

So, this one is easy enough to do in other papers, colors, etc, too.  This way, I can use up MANY of the papers in my stacks, and still get the same, or at least a similar look in lots of cards without having to go out and purchase a ton of the same papers and stuff.

So, those are the first of the prototypes.  I actually have two, no, well....two and a half more to share.  Next time.

Thanks so much for stopping by!!
All Best-
Richard
